Kay Sakai, matriarch of the local community, is honored at the Mochi Tsuki festival on Bainbridge Island, Washington on Saturday, January 4th, 2020. Sakai, who was born on Bainbridge Island, turned 100 this past year. Now in its 31st year, the annual celebration is the largest festival of its kind in the country. Mochi Tsuki, or the pounding of rice to make mochi, is an important New Year’s tradition in Japanese households.
