The directors of the Merchants Associationfeel that for the time being the matter is oftranscendant interest to the citzens of SanFrancisco, and in order that as large a body aspossible of that part of the citizenship which ismost active in promoting the citys materialwelfare may be fully informed about the caseand in a position to lend its assistance to thecause, they decided to have the matter presentedat the annual dinner. WORK DEFERRED BECAUSE OF LABOR CONDITIONS. Wage Demands Make Impossible for the Present one of the MostImportant Improvements Ever Planned for this Hotel at Pine and Stockton Streets for Herbert E. Law. One of the finest improvements ever undertaken in San Francisco has been indefinitelypostponed because of the prevailing labor conditions. This is the splendid modern hotel E. T-aw purposed to erect at the corner of Pine and Stockton streets. Plans in the office of the architects, Messrs. Farr & ^IcCrea, indicate one of the most valu-able additions to the realty of San Francisco that have been jjrojeeted for years. They providedfor a building to cost in the neighborhood of ?$1,250,000, to cover an acre of ground on oneof the finest pieces of view property in the city, and to contain over 700 apartments and 200baths. The style will lie medieval Italian, expressed in large masses of rough, red brick,interspersed with white marble, after the fashion of the Xorth Italian builders, for whichcareful .studies have been made of such specimens of this type of architecture as the town hall
