It was also foundthat where a shelled spot oc-curred in one wheel the matewheel had a similar defect inthe same plane. The conclusion reached fromthis study was that the tremen-dous amount of heat generatedat the small contact area be-tween the wheel and rail duringthe period while the wheel is sliding is responsible for thepeculiar result. The metal at this spot is heated almostto the melting point and is immediately cooled, giving ita very high temper. The subsequent pounding on the railcauses the metal to disintegrate, starting at the surface atthe center and increasing in depth as the disintegrationrecedes from the center. This condition is aggravated bythe improper boring and mounting of wheels, and alsoby irregularities in braking power between different cars, irregularities in the equipment itself arising from unequal. POSITION OF NEW WHEEL ONRAIL 756 Electric Kailway Journal Vol. 54, No. 16 piston travel, improper brake hangers and other improperadjustments. The amount by which a wheel may be worn in treadbefore removal from service is left largely to the Judgmentof the car inspectors. The idea behind the M. C. B. ruleon this point is that when a wheel is sufficiently worn topermit the rim to project below the top of the rail, whereit is likely to receive blows from frogs and crossings, or (Straii^ht Edge resting on -Original Contour Rim at cpposrfe
