This digit is well shown in the right wing represented inFig. 1, and also in the restoration, given below, Fig. 3. In the restoration here attempted, the writer has endeavoured toreproduce (1) the parts actually present or clearly indicated in thespecimen described, and (2) those which the former seemed torequire to complete the outward form in life. The membrane atthe base of the tail may have been somewhat less in extent, and thefold of the skin above the fore-arm either more or less developedthan here represented, but the facts now known render the outlineshere given more than probable. The hands are represented withthe palms Fig. 3. -Eestoration of Ilhamphorhynehus phyllurus, natural size. The present species appears to be most nearly related to Rhamplio-rhjnchiis Gemmingi, von Meyer, from the same geological horizon, and near the same locality. That it is quite distinct, however, isshown, aside from the difference in size, by the complete ankylosisof the scapula and coracoid, and by the fifth digit of the hind footbeing well developed, and having thiee phalanges. In the nameBhamphorhynchus phyllurus, here proposed for the species, the latterdesignation refers to the leaf-shaped caudal appendage, whichappears to be one of its most characteristic features. For the long delay in the description of this important Europeanspecimen, the writer can only plead Vembarras des richesses nearerhome. Tale College, New Haven, March 14, ] 882.
