Mr. Skakel took aleading part in the foundation of the NaturalHistory Society of Montreal and in the estab-lishment of the Montreal General Hospital,where he was a member of the first buildingcommittee and Secretary of the Board ofXIanagement. In recognition of the important serviceswhich he had rendered to the cause of edu-cation in Montreal. Mr. Skakel had the satis- faction of recei\ ing the degree of Doctor ofLaws from his .Mma Mater. .Xt his death in184b he bequeathed all his property to theMontreal General Hospital. A fine portrait. James Master in the High School. 1843. and a mural tablet in the General Hospitalnow commemorate his important services tothat institution. During the closing years of Dr. Skakelsservices, the Royal Grammar School had de-clined in efficiency because of the infirmitiesof age and the reduction in the revenues of theschool, and the citizens of Montreal felt com-pelled to take formal steps to make more satis- The First Building for the High School, afterwardsoccupied by the McGill Normal School and now byBelmont Street School and by the Officesof the School Board.
