White Uhlan - German Soldier Postcard circa 1909-1913

" White Uhlan " German Soldier Postcard circa 1909-1913; Uhlans were originally Polish light cavalry armed with lances, sabres, and pistols. The title was later used by lancer regiments in the Prussian, Austrian, and Russian armies. Uhlans typically wore a double-breasted jacket with a panel (plastron), which was sometimes colored, in the front. An Uhlan's helmet, which is called a Tschapka (also spelled chapka, chapska, czapka, and schapska,) is instantly recognizable. It is topped by what bears a resemblance to a mortarboard, the purpose of which was to deflect sabre blows.
