Delta II rocket lifts off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, January 17, 1997, carrying a NAVSTAR (Navigation Satellite Timing And Ranging) GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite. This first attempted launch of a Block IIR satellite failed when the rocket exploded 12 seconds into flight. The Block IIR series were replacement satellites developed by Lockheed Martin. The first successful launch was on July 23, 1997. Twelve satellites in the series were successfully launched.
