Lower lateral incisors and first molars, loth to 21st month. Canines 16th to 20th month. Second molars 20Lh to 30th month! Scarcely a year elapses after calcification of the milkteeth is complete before absorption begins. There is stillmuch to learn of the cause of this absorption as it seems tobe quite independent of the presence and pressure of thepermanent set. Normally, absorbtion begins at the apexof the root and advances towards the crown. Shortly afterthe root has disappeared the crown is removed either bythe advancing jjermanent tooth or by an accidental ruptureof the attachment between the neck of the tooth and themucous membrane of the gum. We have mentioned that the calcification of the per-manent teeth begins before birth. The process extends toabout the 12th year. Just before the shedding of the tem-porary teeth, i. e., about the 6th year, there are more teethin the jaw than at any other time of life. Fig. ). Thereare present all the temporary teeth and the crowns of all. DO?ai a&<o mmo o < QO 2 5 MO fa fa
