Failure analysis. A technician with an engine component after a high-temperature tensile strength test. The component, a valve stem from a racing car engine, is mounted between the two large metal poles. It is then enclosed in the box and is heated to its operating temperature. The two metal poles are pulled apart until the component between them fails under the tensile load. The component may have a very different tensile strength at operating temperatures to its strength at room temperature, and many specialised alloys are used in their manufacture. Photographed at the Billancourt Laboratory, Boulogne, France.
