Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the basidiomycete yeast Rhodotorula mucilaginosa. Rhodotorula spp. are yeasts found in air, soil, lakes, ocean water, and dairy products. They may colonize plants, humans, and other mammals. R. mucilaginosa, formerly known as Rhodotorula rubra is a pigmented yeast from the Basidiomycota phylum. Characterized by the salmon-pink to coral-red colour of its colonies, R. mucilaginosa can easily disseminate and cause significant disease and infections called rhodotorulorsis. It is a common saprophytic airborne contaminant of skin, lungs, urine and faeces. It has recently been identified in nosocomial, or hospital-acquired infections, especially with immunocompromised patients. It has also been reported as causing fungemia, endocarditis and meningitis. The genus Rhodotorula includes three main active species: Rhodotorula glutinis, Rhodotorula minuta, and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa. Magnification: x1,200 when
