Common warts (verrucae) on a boy's chin. Warts are caused by infection with the Human Papillomaviruses (HPV). Common warts are most common in children; the lower incidence in adults may be due to some acquired immunity factor. Genital warts are common among those who are sexually active, and are classed as a sexually- transmitted disease. HPV infections are transmitted by direct contact. Virus particles have been found on bathroom floors, swimming pools & towels. Inoculation during sexual intercourse, via passage through an infected vagina during childbirth, or orally through chewing, is known to occur.
