It wasrather dry through the greater part of the month,but the final week brought widespread heavy rainfall,relieving the water shortage and woods fire hazard■which had marred the June-September period. Monthlytotals generally exceeded four inches in all southernNew England, in the southern quarter of Vermont andthe southern half of New Hampshire, and in coastalMaine except the extreme northeast. Amounts felloff sharply over the rest of New England, rangingbetween two and four inches. Deficient precipita-tion was reported for Vermont as a whole and formuch of northern New Hampshire and interior WB AP, Me., had the second lowest precipita-tion of any October of record. Temperatures averaged moderately above normal through-out the Section. The first few days were
