No To Bac, Smoking Substitute, 1895


The knight of No-To-Bac has killed his archenemy, Nicotine in this poster by Maxfield Parrish, one of the best known artists and illustrators in the early 20th century. No-To-Bac contained licorice, gentian violet, guaiac, and ammonium chloride salt in a chewing gum base designed to substitute for the act of smoking cigarettes, pipes, and cigars.
