An old engraving of Duff’s marine governor – the cutaway at the bottom shows its workings. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. A governor, or speed limiter or controller, is a device used to measure and regulate the speed of a machine, such as an engine. Often a centrifugal governor will use the effect of inertial force on rotating weights to regulate its speed by altering the input flow of steam. Duff’s version operates by the force of a centrifugal pump in a vessel of oil. There is a spring balance and cut-off above the governor.

A governor, or speed limiter or controller, is a device used to measure and regulate the speed of a machine, such as an engine. Often a centrifugal governor (Watt or fly-ball governor) on a reciprocating steam engine, will use the effect of inertial force on rotating weights driven by the machine output shaft to regulate its speed by altering the input flow of steam. Duff’s version operates by the force of a centrifugal pump in a vessel of oil. There is a spring balance and cut-off above the governor.
