In connection with the statement that as a rule the pictures[of this kind] are largely the result of imagination rather than fordepicting- the history of anything, it may be added that this viewis not accepted by the Rev. Dr. John Maclean (now editor of TheWesleyan, Halifax) who spent several years as a missionary amongthe Blackfoots. Dr. Maclean thinks it is yet possible to discoverthe story told by the pictograph on figure 81. Porcupine Quill 58 ARCH^OLOGICAL REPORT Until within the last few years there is said to have been onQuarry Point, Lake Couchiching, the northern extension of LakeSimcoe, a rock, on which were some Indian paintings. Mr. J. HughHammond, barrister, of Orillia, who takes much interest in all thingsconnected with the Rama Reserve people, of whom he is the trustedadviser, has kindly procured for the museum what purports to be acopy in quill-work of the rock paintings referred to. The work wasdone by Mesaquab (Jonathan Yorke), a Mississauga, on the RamaReserve, which includes Quarry Point, but as he was entirely de-pendent on his memory, and it is some years since the rock fell intothe water, considerable allowance must be made for the accuracyof his performance. The design is said to represent two Ojibwa warriors after the lastgreat battle fought with the Iroquois, the central figure being a Mo-hawk, or Canienga.
