A lotus bud (Nelumbo nucifera) blooms in the Charles Wood Japanese Garden, July 20, 2021, in Mobile, Alabama. The lotus, also known as Indian lotus or sacred lotus, is a hardy plant that has existed for more than 145 million years. It thrives in wetlands and grows well in mud, adapting easily to temperature extremes. It is often used as a symbol of life, death, rebirth, purity, grace, and beauty. The Charles Wood Japanese Garden features acres of ponds filled with koi, nature trails, bridges, walking paths, cherry trees, Japanese maples, and lotus ponds. The gardens are named for Charles Wood, who spent years transforming the former fish hatchery into a garden. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
