In the exercise of this officehe greatly distinguished himself by his assiduityin promoting the improvement of his pupils,and by otlier exertions for the advancement oflearning. In 1725 he was made pro-proctor ofthe university and master of the schools ; andin this situation he published an oration andfour Latin sermons on the subject of academicaldiscipline. He much improved the discussionof philosophical questions in the schools, andintreduced the study of Locke and other modernphilosophers. In 1733 he was elected a fellowof Eton-college ; and about the same time hewas presented to the vicarage of Maple Derhamin Oxfordshire.
