Polarised light micrograph of stellate leaf hairs of from a fuzzy deutzia (Deutzia scabra) plant. Deutzia are members of the Hydrangeaceae. The leaves bear stellate hairs which can vary in density, size, and the number of points on the stars'. There are also differences between the number and structure of hairs on the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves. At least 20 different species can be identified on this basis. In Japan woodworkers utilize the abrasive qualities of the leaves for fine polishing. Magnification: x68 at 10cm wide.
