Editorial use only Scientist testing soil samples for herbicide residue using a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. This device suspends substances in a gas which is transported along a tube coated in a specific chemical. Substances being tested will be separated as different components will be slowed to different extents by the coating on the tube. This is being used to detect herbicide in soil, as residual herbicide from farming can be harmful to natural ecosystems.
