Zidovudine HIV drug. Person holding a box containing capsules of the nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor drug zidovudine, marketed under the name Retrovir. It slows the spread of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) in the body by inhibiting reverse transcriptase, the enzyme that converts HIV RNA (ribonucleic acid) into viral DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) that can be incorporated into human cells. This drug is used as a part of antiretroviral therapy in the treatment of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).
