Small shrine still covered in snow during spring outside Kuroyu at Nyuto Onsen, Akita, Japan

Nyuto Onsen is a famous and popular onsen town in the mountains of eastern Akita Prefecture, in the district of Semboku. It is also part of the Towada-Hachimantai National Park. It is the common launching point for visitors wanting to climb the nearby Akita Komagatake. The onsen is known for its therapeutic milky spring water. It is also one of few remaining places in Japan where one can find mixed gender outdoor baths. Of the onsen ryokans there, Kuroyu, is the furthest in. Because of the harsh winter there, Kuroyu will be closed during the winter period, whilst the other Ryokans remain in operation.
