The abandoned rail line known as the "Bronx Swamp" is seen in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx in New York on Wednesday, December 16, 2009. The one and one-half mile rail line runs from Port Morris to the Melrose station and was formerly abandoned by CSX in 2004 and there is no clear ownership of the tracks and the right of way. The NYC Dept. of Environmental Protection has drained the below grade tracks which collected water and debris and resembled a fetid canal. The DEP removed more than 625,000 gallons of stagnant water and re-graded the rail bed as well as upgraded the drainage pipes. The Dept. of Sanitation removed 45 tons of debris. (© Richard B. Levine)
