London Underground's Stratford Depot, the futuristic ‘supershed’ where Jubilee Line rolling stock maintenance is carried out.
An engineer inspecting a locomotive in the huge and futuristic Stratford Depot (affectionately called the 'Supershed') where essential inspection and maintenance is carried out on all rolling stock from the Jubilee Line Extension, opened in 1999, the newest addition to the London Underground network. This state of the art structure cost £ ($31m) and is 208,000 square feet (18,720 square metres) in size. The 330ft. x 600ft. (100m x 180m) supershed shed is designed to contain up to 11 complete trains at once and all forms of train inspection, maintenance and repair for the Jubilee Line are carried out here. Because of the supershed's vast interior space, strong emphasis was placed on the use of natural lighting. High-quality, natural daylighting exists in few of today's buildings but Stratford's supershed uses a special wall cladding called Kalwall. Kalwall has the ability to fill a space with diffused natural daylight, even on cloudy, dark days. Millions of glass fibers imbedded in the wall panels refract sunshine and overcast daylight in a balanced and diffuse wash of glare-free, usable light. Even on bright sunny days, there is no harsh glare. Stratford Depot was amongst the winners of the 1997 British Construction Industry Awards. The judges noted: ''This is a great tribute to the client who opted for a solution that achieved far more than mere fulfillment of functional needs. The Stratford Depot clearly demonstrates that industrial buildings can aspire to the highest standards."
