The Chapel, formerly also the Church of St. John Baptist,is the first object which claims special attention. The ( hapelwas built 1264-1300; the first high altar dedicated 1277 ; Tran-septs finished 1414; Tower 1448-51. The visitor cannot fail tobe struck with the extent and beauty of the Choir as seen fromMerton-street, and the bold effect of the Tower and transepts^. 6o Aldens Oxford Guide. The original design apparently was for a cathedral-shaped edificeon the usual cruciform ground-plan, the tower and transepts plainlyshowing traces of a projected extension westward. We enter thecollege by the principal gateway, which is surmounted by figures ofthe founder and Henry III, and a curious sculpture of St. John Baptist preaching in thewilderness; and passingthrough an iron gate on ourright into the old burial-ground, we gain access tothe interior of the Chapelby a small door on the of the North entering we notice on ourleft a mural tablet of white mar-ble, beautifully carved in reliefby Woolner, in memory of themartyred Bishop Patteson,.some-time a l-ellow of this this is the oldest memo-rial brass, dated 13 lo. In thetransept are also monuments toSir Thomas Eodley (see 6), andSir H, Savile ; and tablets toAnthony Wood, Col.
