The Grand Army Plaza is divided into two sections by Central Park South Street . The section in front of the Hotel Plaza is the Pulitzer fountain in the middle , representing Karl Bitter 's Abundance , donated by the publisher Joseph Pulitzer : the statue of the source is Pomona, the Roman goddess of orchards . Dossier Doris served as a model for the statue. The north side of Grand Army Plaza , has the famous gilded bronze statue of General Sherman, Audustus made by Saint -Gaudens . Scholars Gate, behind Grand Army Plaza, is one of the two original estradas for carriages of Central Park , the other being Merchants Gate (Gate of the Merchants ) in Columbus Circle ( Columbus Circle ) .
