Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic writing. Hieroglyphs (\sacred carving\") are symbols, here inscribed in rock, which made up ancient Egyptian writing. Fine craftmanship has gone into this carving which here includes the profiles of many different types of bird. This writing system from mid-4th millennium BC to 3rd century AD combines picture signs with those indicating letters. It is normally meant to be read from right to left, the signs facing the beginning of the line. Photographed at the Temple of Karnak in Luxor, Egypt."
