The family of Campernowne, wliich insplendour of descent, yields to few in thewest of England, was originally called Ca m foArnulphi, and the first members sent to par-liament, by the county of Cornwall, wereWilliam de Campo-Arnulphi, and ReginaldBeville. The first of the name at Modbury, (wequote Prince) was Richard, a younger sonof Sir Henry Chambernon, of Clist Cham-bernon; which Sir Henry was son of SirOliver ; as he was son of Henry Chamber-non, of Clist and Ilfarcombe, in KingHenry II. time, the last of which family(of Clist Chambernon) was Sir WilliamChambernon, who left issue, Elizabeth, hisonly daughter and heir ; a frolic lady, thatmarried William Polglas, within three daysof her fathers death, and within two daysafter her husband Polglass death, she wasmarried again unto John Cergeaux.
