If the new branches are cut back orheaded-in when they are two or three feet high, they in their turn will develop more branches andthus the fruitfulness of the plant will be greatly in-creased. Top pruning, therefore, should always be done gradually a little each year. The heads of fruit trees should be kept open so thatair may circulate freely through the trees. Whereverthe branches get so thick as to prevent this, some shouldbe removed. Water sprouts, since they grow up into the•center, should always be cut out. 194 AN INTRODUCTION TO AGRICULTUEE Pruning during the growing season tends toward theformation of fruit buds^ while pruning in the dormantseason induces woodv growths. All pruning should be done with some definite objectin view, and whenever cuts of large branches are made, they should be as close to the main branchas possible and parallel with it. 190.
