Spinal disease and spinal curvature : their treatment by suspension and the use of the plaster of Paris bandage . except being kept in bed. Could not go about without support-ing himself by placing his hands on his knees. Went to the Indianopolis Institute in 1873, pretty much inthe same condition that he is in at present, except that thehump is a little more prominent. A brace was applied, which has been worn constantly eversince, and for the last two years uninterruptedly, day and night. TREATMENT OF CASES. 75 This brace gives support, but makes my back very sore, and Icannot breathe so well when it is on as when it is off. The skin was often chafed, and always red over the breast-bone, and very much galled under the arms. The picture (fig. 46), engraved from a photograph byMr. Mason of Bellevue Hospital, shows that, even with theinstrument on, he requires support from his arms; and the Fig. head rest under his chin increased the pain so much in his backthat he was compelled to remove it. The photograph without the instrument (see engraving, fig. 47) gives him almost, if not qnite, as good position as theone with it, and he says he feels more comfortable without it. He was suspended by the head and the axillae, and theplaster jacket applied, on March 22, 1877, and in two hoursfrom that time walked, without even a cane, to his hotel, andleft for his home in Indiana the same evenino-. 7() potts disease. His Leight was increased a little over 1 incL, and he waspeifectly free from pain. He sent me the photograph, from which fig. 48 has beenengraved, April 25, 1877, and in his letter states that he hasentered college, can do a full days work with the other students, Fig. 49.
