In 1819 occurred the first duel fought after the admission of theState into the Union. This took place in St. Glair county betweenAlphonso Stewart and William Bennett. It was intended to be asham duel, to turn ridicule against Bennett, the challenging party-Stewart was in the secret but Bennett was left to believe it arealitv. Their ffuns were loaded with blank cartridses. Bennett,suspecting a trick, put a ball into his gun without the knowledgeof his seconds. The word fire was given, and Stewart fellmortally wounded. Bennett made his escape but was subsequentlyc
