Outhouse block bucket toilets in an area of informal housing, Langa Township, Cape Town, South Africa

Informal squatter sites are considered temporary residential areas, moved when a location is re-planned, so unhygienic bucket toilets remain. They involve a walk from home, may be at night, and are fly-infested in hot summer weather. They may also overflow, if not emptied on time, and the people employed to empty them may cause spillages. There may be problems for HIV/AIDS sufferers experiencing severe diarrhoea. A stark feature of everyday life for some township residents.
