It is about 1 mile east of TourmalineQueen and lies mainly in the SE. J of Sec. 14. Its thickness seemsto vary from 30 to 50 feet and it dips about 15° west. The hanging wallappears to be a mica diorite and the foot wall a granite, but over a con-siderable area the hanging wall has been removed by erosion so that ithas been called a blanket vein. The gem material, chiefly kunzite,occurs in a reddish clay in pockets of considerable size. One of thesewas 3^ feet high and 20 feet long. Lepidolite in small masses is offrequent occurrence. The following are Dr. Eakles determinations of the wall rocks: Hanging-wall, dark hornblende-diorite. A thin section shows therock to consist almost wholly of plagioclase feldspar and fibrous greenhornblende. Magnetite occurs scattered throughout. Foot wall, biotite-granite. A disintegrated granitic rock. A thinsection shows biotite flakes, little plagioclase, considerable orthoclaseand small amounts of quartz and hornblende. An occasional titanitecrystal is seen. The Pala Chief claim is one of a group of 5, the others being OceanView, Goddess, Hazel W. and Knickerbocker. This group, togetherwith the Tourmaline Queen, Pala King and Homestake, is controlled bythe Pala Chief Gem Mining Company, of San Diego, Frank A. Salmons,president; R. Fenton, secretary. SAN DIEGO C
