Much of what is called fanaticism is Christianityin earnest, or an uncommon zeal in the promotion ofthe cause of God. If it did not collide with a formalreligion, and rebuke the apathy and carnality that havecrept into many of the churches, it would have asmoother sea. As it is, it will be charged with being adisturber of the peace; of putting variances betweenbrethren; of producing strife and alienation in com-munities ; of breaking up the customs of the fathers,and doing a hundred things that ought never tohave been done.
