British or European Otter, Lutra Lutra. KEY FACTS. Length, 2-3ft. Height, 12 in. Weight, 12-33lbs, males are heavier. Sexual maturity, Males 18 months, females, 2 years. Mating, Any time, females mate 12 months after birth of previous litter. Gestation, 61-74 days. Young, 1-6, average 2-3. Habit, Solitary. Diet, Mainly fish. Call, Whistles and snarls. Lifespan, 9-10 years. The otter is a large member of the weasel family with an amphibious lifestyle. In the wild they are elusive, secretive animals living in undisturbed river, streams and estuaries. in the 1960's they were on the verge of extinction. Now with full legal protection, cleaner rivers and managed habitat it is returning to former haunts, though its distribution will always be limited by the availability of fish.
