Of all the names connected with the college of SpringHill no one, if we except that of the great Bishop Portier, will fill asconspicuous a place in its history or be surrounded with as great a lus-ter as that of Rev. Father Loras, it^ first president. From his nephew,Father de Cailly, who wrote a notice on his uncles life, we gatherthe following few facts : He was the son of Jean Matthias Loras andEtiennnette Michelet, and was born to the world and to God on thesame day, August, 30, 1792, receiving at baptism the name of his father, Mat-thias. The city of Lyons, his birthplace, was then in the throes of a revolutionand he was only a year and a half old when his father was led to the guillotine forthe reason that he was an honest God-fearing man. A few days afterward thetwo brothers of this excellent Christian died a like death for the same cause, andhis two sisters died in
