False colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cysts of the brine shrimp Artemia salina. The brine shrimp (crustacea), lives in highly salted media such as the Great Salt Lake or in saturated ponds where salt is produced commercially. They are adapted to life in temporary pools, forming two sorts of eggs; summer eggs which develop rapidly & encysted larvae or winter eggs (seen here), which can withstand desiccation, surviving for incredibly long periods in a dormant state. The thickness of the wall, which protects the dormant embryo is visible among the cracked pieces of a hatched cyst. Mag: X 280 at 10x8 inch size.
