Kathakali, just not a classical dance, dancer must know how to create character from makeup & has to be done themselves to give perfect touch. Take a mirror in hand and do colourful makeup in low light is an creative art too. It is one of the most stylised classical Indian dance-drama known for the classic colourful make-up of characters elaborate costumes, detailed gestures and well-defined body movements (Mudra) presented in tune with the anchor playback music and complementary percussion. It originated in Kerala during the 17th century and has developed over the years with lots of improvements on looks, refined gestures and added themes besides more ornate singing and precise drumming during show.
