A Convention of Radical Men met at Cleveland, Ohio, May31, 1864, and nominated John C. Fremont, Cal., for President,and John C. Cochrane, N. Y., for Vice-President. They adopteda platform nearly like that of the Republicans, but with a clauseendorsing the one term principle. This was designed to headoff the renomination of Lincoln, who had given offense to themby his tardy action respecting slavery. The candidates with-drew in favor of the Baltimore nominees. The position taken by the Democrats in their platform to theeffect that the war was a failure, and that its cessation wasdemanded by the country, presented an issue which the Repub-licans met squarely, and with confidence. The result was apopular verdict in their favor, not only in the Presidential but inthe Congressional ROBERT E. LEE.
