A far simpler method, however, and one which hasalways given very satisfactory results in these laboratories, is topurify the water by shaking it with a higlily absorptive carbon black, which removes from the water any traces of injurious bodies it maycontain. Not all carbon black possesses this property to an equaldegree; the variety used in this laboratory is known as the G Elfbrand, and is prepared on a commercial scale by burning natural gasand condensing the finely divided carbon on cooled surfaces. It isthe same carbon black used and described in Bulletin 31 for thepurpose of decolorizing soil and plant solutions. For the presentpurpose the carbon black is thoroughly washed with distilled water a Bul. 36, Bureau of Soils, U. S. Dept. Agr. Bui. 70, Bureau of Soils, U. S. Dept. of Agriculture.
