VENTILATING STOEED COAL. The practice of installing pipes in piles of stored bituminous coal, in the belief that they will allow a circulation of air and prevent spontaneous combus- tion, should be abandoned, says the Na- tional Fire Protection Association, which has heretofore advocated the idea. Objection to the plan is made by Van H. Manning, director of the United States Bureau of Mines, who asserts that air pipes may do as much toward increasing the hazard from combustion as to de- crease it. Ho is of the opinion that, un- less a pile of coal could be so made as to maintain a flow of air through the pipes sufficient to carry off the heat generated, the only useful purpose these pipes serve is to provide a means whereby the tem- perature of the interior of the pile can be ascertained by lowering a thermome- ter in them. Under ordinary circum- stances these pipes do not admit enough air to ventilate the pile, but do let in sufficient quantities to promote com- bustion.
