CROSSHEAD. sidered satisfactory in outline, and simplyreduced in weight to meet the conditions. Something new in crossheads for heavypower is shown in our engraving of aworking drawing, representing the prac-tice adopted for trial by Superintendent ofMotive Power W. H. Thomas, of theSouthern Railway, for his 21 x 28 ten-wheeled passenger engines. It was de-signed by Mr. Chris. Thomas, master me-chanic of the Southern at Alexandria, Va.,who has given proof of his familiaritywith the needs of the case by a mechani-cal-appearing production. This crosshead is very light, weighingonly 167 pounds, as against 287 pounds inthe old one of gray iron, which it dis-places. A study of the dimensions anddistribution of metal explains how therequired strength is obtained with theminimum of material. No gibs or shoes are used: the guidewearing surfaces are tinned 3-16 inchthick on faces and flanges, and have afillet of 38-inch radius
