Holmes, Walcott and Gannett. US geologists Joseph Austin Holmes (1859-1915), Charles Doolittle Walcott (1850-1927) and Henry Gannett (1846-1914) sitting on rocks at the summit of Harney Peak (now Black Elk Peak), Black Hills, South Dakota, USA. Holmes is best-known as the first director of the Bureau of Mines. Walcott is best-known for his discovery in 1909 of well-preserved fossils in the Burgess Shale of British Columbia, Canada. Gannett is known as the 'Father of the quadrangle', the basis for topographical maps in the United States. Photographed on 12th August 1897.
