The Church of St. James, in Cooling, Kent, England
Situated on the Hoo Peninsular, once a very bleak part of Kent, the Church of St. James in Cooling is unusually homogeneous, dating almost entirely from - 1320, although the upper part of the tower is believed to date from the end of the 14th c., and the porch and vestry date from the 19th c., the church being restored in stages 1869-88. However, the churchyard is more famous than the church itself, as it is believed that it provided the inspiration for the opening scene of Charles Dickens' 'Great Expectations'. The church was declared redundant in 1974, and since 1976 has been in the care of what is now the Churches Conservation Trust.
