"stop the G8" anti-capitalism protest graffiti, stenciled onto blue building in central Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Most of Amsterdam's squatted buildings and blocks have now closed as the city's leaders prefer to encourage corporate business rather than counter-culture. For some this is a welcome change as it is seen to deter some undesirable elements from coming to the city, for others it marks the end of an idealistic phase in the city's history. A time when squatters controlled whole blocks, containing cinemas, studios and galleries as well as apartments. This building off the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal is one of the last to be controlled by a squatting community.
