Skyline of the Renaissance city of Mantua at dusk with reflections in the water of the lake formed by the Mincio River.
Mantua is a small city in the south-eastern part of Lombardy, crossed by the Mincio River - coming from Garda Lake - which widens just before the city to form the first lake called Lake Superior; in correspondence with the city there is Lake di Mezzo and immediately after the Lower Lake. Then the waters return to being a river that flows into the Po. Mantua is probably of Etruscan origin, then it experienced Roman domination, it was invaded by the so-called barbarians but it was in the Middle Ages that it experienced strong expansion, above all when it became the domain of the Gonzagas who made it one of the richest and most important Renaissance cities in Europe. After the Gonzaga dynasty ended in the 18th century, it passed to the Habsburg Empire, then was conquered by the French of Napoleon Bonaparte to return to Austria. Conquered by the Piedmontese army, in 1866 it became part of the new kingdom of Italy with Verona and the rest of the Veneto.
