. Vanishing England . Hand-and-a-half Seymour Lucas, Seventeenth-century Boot, in the possession of Ernest Crofts, Esq., strels gallery, its solar, kitchens, corridors, and , it is now owned by those who love and respectantiquity and its architectural beauties, and is in everyrespect an old English mansion well preserved andtenderly cared for. Yet at one time it was almost doomedto destruction. Not many years ago it was the propertyof a man who knew nothing of its importance. Hethreatened to pull it down or to turn the old house intoa tannery. Our Berks Archaeological Society endea-voured to raise money for its purchase in order to pre-serve it. This action helped the owner to realise that the OLD MANSIONS 187 house was of some commercial value. Its destructionwas stayed, and then, happily, it was purchased by thepresent owners, who have done so much to restore itsoriginal beauties. Ockwells was built by Sir John Norreys about the year 1466. The chapel was not completed
