The floor of the quarry is three feet abovethe creeklevel. The cover soon increases as followed backinto the hill which rises 100 to 150 feet, and is composed ofshales and sandstone ledges. A sectionof the Moats quarry shows: Feet. Light buff irregular stone 8 to 10 •Gray sandstone, breaks sbaly 4 Brownish gray sandstone 2 Gray or blue sandstone 6 Brownish sandstone 4 The joint planes run N 40° E, N 400 W, also east andwest. At Downs, four miles east of Mannington, the Gilboysandstone is well exposed in the railroad cuts; and higher onthe hill another sandstone is quarried on the Bartlett farm,one half mile north of town, by A. R. Wilcox. The floor ofthis quarry is 70 feet above the creek level at the edge oftown. A coal is found 18 feet lower than this sandstone onthe hill just west of town, at the horizon of the Waynesburgcoal, so this sandstone is the Waynesburg. The sandstone at this small quarry is buff to grayish buffin color with large quartz grains giving a coarse rock is hard but crumbles readily and contains numerouswhite kaolin particles, also white mica flakes here and of the layers are conglomerates. Quarry. The quarry face is 100 feet long east and westand is worked back 20 feet. The rock dips north into thehill, and the face of stone now exposed is 10 feet high
