Alan Cobham (1894-1973), British aviation pioneer. Cobham learnt to fly in the Royal Flying Corps during World War I. After the war he moved to flying civil aircraft, undertaking pioneering long distance flights around Europe and Africa and to India and Australia. In 1935 Cobham set up a small airline that flew between Croydon Airport, London, UK, and the Channel Islands.
