. The history of Herodotus. A new English version, ed. with copious notes and appendices, illustrating the history and geography of Herodotus, from the most recent sources of information; and embodying the chief results, historical and ethnographical, which have been obtained in the progress of cuneiform and hieroglyphical discovery . them the waving linesrepresented in the paintings, and thiswas done by means of a wooden instru-ment, divided into segmental partitions1^ inch broad on its upper face, Λvhichwas held by the hand while the linenwas pressed upon it. One of them is inthe Museum of Florence (fig. 2 gives thereal size of the divisions). The fine texture of the Egyptian linenis fully proved by its transparency, asrepresented in the paintings, and by thestatements of ancient writers, sacred(Gen. xli. 42; and 2 Chron. i. 16) as wellas profane, and by the wonderful tex-ture of a piece found near Memphis, part of which is in my possession. Ingeneral quality it is equal to the finestnow made; and for the evenness of thethreads, without knot or break, it is farsuperior to any of modem has in the inch 540 threads, or 270double threads in the warp, and 110 inthe woof,—a disparity which, as observes, belonged to theEgyptian system of manufacture.(See At. Eg. W. vol. iii. p. 120, &c.). No. IV.
