New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, on 31st August 2005, Quickbird satellite image. Water is seen pouring from a ruptured levee (barrier), and roads and buildings are submerged by flood waters. Hurricane Katrina hit on 29th August 2005. Although many people fled the city before the hurricane hit, many thousands remained and thousands died. Katrina was the third strongest hurricane ever to hit the USA, packing winds of over 230 kilometres per hour. The storm surge and rains led to the breaching of levees that held back river, sea and lake water from the low-lying city. Once ruptured, around 80% of the city was flooded. The total evacuation of New Orleans was ordered on 30th August 2005.
